In Gympie most lawns need mowing every one to two weeks through the warm, wet growing season, stretching to every three to four weeks in winter. Grass type, shade and recent rain all matter, so let the height of the grass guide you more than the calendar.

A simple schedule to start from

There is no single answer, but a sensible starting point for most Gympie lawns looks like this:

  • Summer (hot, humid, wet): every 7 to 14 days.
  • Autumn and spring: about every 2 to 3 weeks as growth slows or picks up.
  • Winter: every 3 to 4 weeks, sometimes longer in a cold, dry spell.

Treat that as a guide, not a rule. A fortnight of rain in January can do the work of a month of growth in July.

Let the grass tell you

A better trigger than the calendar is height. Mow when the lawn has grown about one third taller than your target cutting height. If you keep a lawn at 40 mm, mow when it reaches about 55 to 60 mm. Cutting more than a third of the blade at once stresses the grass, leaves it yellow and ragged, and slows recovery.

Why too often is also a problem

Mowing every few days on a lawn that is not growing quickly does not help. It keeps the grass low, which shallow-roots the lawn and lets weeds in. If clippings are barely there when you empty the catcher, you are mowing too often for the conditions.

What changes the schedule

Several things push you towards the shorter or longer end of the range:

  • Grass type: couch and kikuyu grow faster than buffalo or zoysia.
  • Shade: lawns under trees grow more slowly and need less frequent mowing.
  • Rain and fertiliser: wet weather and feeding both speed growth.
  • Standard: a lawn kept short and sharp needs more frequent mowing than a relaxed family lawn.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to mow weekly or fortnightly in summer?

Weekly is easier on the lawn in peak growth because you remove less each time. If fortnightly is all you can manage, raise the cutting height slightly so you stay within the one-third rule.

Can I mow wet grass?

You can, but it is not ideal. Wet grass clumps, clogs the mower, cuts unevenly and can spread fungal disease. If you must, go slowly and rake or catch the clippings.

Should I mow before or after rain?

Before, if you can, so the lawn is not left long and wet. Mowing the day after heavy rain once the surface has dried often gives the cleanest cut.

How do I know if I am mowing too short?

If the lawn looks brown or stubbly straight after mowing, or weeds appear in bare patches, the cut is likely too low for the grass type.
